Great DVD Helps PD Families with Everyday Tasks

People are giving thumbs up reviews of John Argue's DVD for Parkinson’s Disease patients and their caregivers.  Parkinson’s Disease & The Activities of Daily Living (ADL), in collaboration with Jeanne Csuy, PT, offers help for patients and their families. Go to: www.parkinsonsexercise.com.

Parkinson’s Disease & The Activities of Daily Moving is a55-minute video which thoroughly covers the problems Parkinson’s Disease patients encounter on a daily basis. Those with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) routinely have difficulty rising from a deep crouch, getting into or out of a car, getting up after a fall, or beginning to walk after a ‘freezing episode’ (an unpredictable inability to take a step forward). Over 50 daily activities are covered, first with a demonstration by a person with PD, then with Jeanne Csuy or John Argue demonstrating how the caregiver can assist the patient through each activity.

Rose Wichmann, Manager of the Struthers Parkinson’s Center, Minneapolis, says of this new DVD, “Kudos to John Argue for producing a video filled with practical strategies for the everyday challenges faced by those with Parkinson’s!  Many people will be helped by these suggestions, which are made easy to understand through clear direction and visual demonstration.  A wonderful resource for practice and problem solving... thank you John!”

Lynn A. Klanchar, RN, MS, McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, VA says, “I ordered several DVD’s for our clinic before I even watched the entire video because of past experiences with John Argue’s products. This video does not disappoint. Along with his students, and with the help of a physical therapist, John demonstrates proper ways to climb and descend stairs, sit on the commode, correctly use a walker, and simply work more efficiently and safely in the kitchen. People are advised to review it at least once a week to refresh their memory. I am overjoyed to have this resource to share and recommend to patients and caregivers. Thank you, again!”

This informative video is ideal for group or individual viewing. Parkinson’s patients, their caregivers and families, support groups or residential living groups will all benefit from this material.  The price is $27, which includes priority mail within the continental U.S., and it is available at www.parkinsonsexercise.com

With more than 25 years of experience in constructing movement exercises for Parkinson’s patients, John Argue is the developer of The John Argue Method™.  This system can improve flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, help prevent falls, improve facial expressiveness, and improve intelligibility of speech.  Mr. Argue’s techniques are published in his book entitled Parkinson’s Disease & The Art of Moving (New Harbinger Publications, January 2000.), and are demonstrated in the Video Companion to  Parkinson’s Disease & The Art of Moving (DVD or VHS) which was released in August 2004.

        The PD Song.....

My name is Mark Solomon. I'm a TV writer/producer (ALICE, DIAGNOSIS: MURDER, GRACE UNDER FIRE.) I was also Executive Producer of NEWHART. (By the by, I was nominated for an EMMY for writing the now famous LAST NEWHART episode.)

2 1/2 years ago, I found out I had Parkinson’s Disease. I'm still at a very early stage, though I do have tremors in my right arm and leg. Like Michael J. Fox, I tried to hide it. I sucked at it! People could tell something was wrong with me.

I'm also a songwriter and I was having difficulty playing the guitar and piano. My wife, Cary, told me not to get discouraged. Keep practicing! Maybe write a new song! About what? She said I should write about Parkinson's. WHAT?! I'm a comedy writer and that's way too depressing! She said it doesn't have to be a sad song. Make it funny!

Hmmm… she might be on to something!

I picked up my guitar and within a half hour I had the song! I played it for a musician friend of mine, Sean Fullerton, over the phone. He said he would love to add piano, drums and bass to it. Fine by me!

The reaction to the song has been amazing! Some people laugh, some cry, some tap their feet (That could be a side effect from the Mirapex!)

Anyone who has PD or knows someone who has it will identify.

(Mark's CD is available on Amazon.com...click here to learn more and to hear a preview. The song is also available on CDBaby.com.  Coming to iTunes soon. A generous donation from  the proceeds of  each download will be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.)

It's a very uplifting song about a terrible condition. Very few diseases have their own theme song! I think I've cornered the market!

Sketching at work pushed Jorge Lacoste into artist's life

By Erik Hayden Correspondent, Ventura County Star

        Tuesday, March 9, 2010

It started four years ago when he was doodling on a piece of scratch paper at work.

Jorge Lacoste, a subrogation supervisor at an insurance firm, kept nonchalantly sketching until he sat back and came to a surprising conclusion: His drawings were pretty good.

After the workplace revelation, he began experimenting with drawing and painting. Something seemed to click. A week later, he took one of his first paintings to the office as a gift to a colleague. His co-workers noticed and asked if they could buy some of his other artwork.

Now he needed to paint more.

“It just came to me out of the blue,” said Lacoste, of Ventura. “I’d work all day and come home and paint all night. I never really had any thoughts about painting before.”

Four years and nearly 500 paintings later, Lacoste can no longer be considered an amateur. He prefers acrylic for the simple reason that it “hides mistakes well.” And he prefers painting on a 24-by-36 canvas because “it just seems to feel right.”

Despite this unguarded humility, he has garnered local acclaim and has been consistently selling his art through a steady trickle of positive word-of-mouth.

His garage now serves as a makeshift studio lined with 20 of his most recent paintings. “My wife is particular,” he said. “We have only three paintings inside the house.” His work adorns the halls of art collectors throughout the nation.

Within the year, a documentary on his painting recorded by USC film school student Kareem Dimashkie is expected to premiere at a regional film festival.

Lacoste has accomplished so much so fast. And this is before you consider that he has struggled daily with Parkinson’s disease for the past 30 years.

“Parkinson’s is a gift — a gift that nobody wants. I sometimes say it’s the best thing and the worst thing that ever happened to me,” Lacoste said. “You’re constantly faced with your mortality. You’re always addressing the fact that life becomes a little bit more meaningful and a little bit more intense. That’s true with anyone with a serious condition.”

But it’s clear that although the disease is a constant challenge, it certainly doesn’t define him. In fact, it comes off as something of an afterthought as he eagerly describes the style of his art. “Whatever I see, I just try to capture it,” he said. As for substance, he said, “I like to paint things that have unusual shading.”

That might be the reason his portfolio is so diverse.

Working with acrylic, he can mold, chip and shade the canvas, giving each painting a vibrant texture. “If a painting brings me comfort, then that’s the direction I’ll keep going in,” he said.

While Lacoste still keeps his day job at the insurance company, he is beginning to realize that he may have a shot at becoming a full-time artist.

“I know that there have been only three guys in the history of the world who have made a living off of painting,” he joked. “However, it might not be beyond belief that I may be able to make a living off of only this.”
